THE people of Worcestershire stood silent yesterday to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

At the war memorial outside Worcester Cathedral, traffic was brought to a standstill as people remembered those who have lost their lives in conflict.

The Last Post was sounded before a wreath of poppies was laid on the memorial, prayers were said and the National Anthem sung.

It was a scene repeated across the country.

Tomorrow, communities will once again gather for Remembrance Sunday.

The Royal British Legion is co-ordinating wreath-laying ceremonies and parades across the county.

Men and women of the county’s 2nd Battalion Mercian Regiment are currently serving in Afghanistan.

Tomorrow at Worcester Cathedral a service will start at 10am.

Members of the Boys Brigade band will join the parade to the cathedral with the Salvation Army band and Worcester Male Voice Choir.

The wreath-laying will follow at the city war memorial and a bugler will sound last post before the two minutes’ silence at 11am.

Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire Michael Brinton, the city mayor David Tibbutt and MP Robin Walker will be at the event. Afterwards, the Lord Lieutenant and mayor will take the salute outside the Guildhall, with a marchpast by veterans and uniformed groups.

Coun Tibbutt said: “I call on all members of the community to make time this Sunday to remember those who lost their lives for the sake of our freedom.”

In Claines, members of the Royal British Legion will start a parade from the corner of St Anne’s Road to Claines Church for a service before a wreath-laying and two-minute silence. Lord Sandys is taking the salute.

And in St John’s, legion members will gather at 9.30am in Swanpool Walk.

At 10.45am, there will be wreath and cross-laying at the memorial before respects are paid at 11am.
