EVERY time I watch Gok Wan style another woman desperately in need of some fashion TLC I wish it was me. I used to believe personal stylists were just for reality TV shows or the rich and famous. Not so, it would appear.
Worcester mum-of-two Cathryn Seymour, from Warndon Villages, Worcester, gave up a career as an investment banker to become a personal stylist. She trained at the Nicky Hambleton-Jones (former host of Channel 4’s 10 Years Younger) Style Academy in London and has now set up her own business, MyStyle Personal Styling, which offers custom advice to suit a person’s body shape and lifestyle.
After the birth of her second child, Mrs Seymour said her body shape changed and she no longer knew which clothes suited her.
She said: “My self-confidence hit a low. I would have loved to have known of a professional who could have given me advice. I decided I could be that professional.”
The first thing she does when I get in touch is a wardrobe consultation.
My major issue is workwear – I’d like a whole new work wardrobe.
She looks at what I already have and asks why it’s divided into workwear and everything else. After merging the two it turns out I have an extensive new work wardrobe for free and saved several casual tops I was thinking of donating.
Mrs Seymour tells me to stop labelling my clothes (work, casual, smart, evening) and mix and match to find new looks for every occasion.
My wardrobe lacks key pieces, which our follow-up shopping trip will remedy. But on the day, I have a new issue. In winter I usually buy the thickest, chunkiest jumpers I can, which make me look like the side of a bus. Mrs Seymour tells me the trick is layering thinner pieces.
When we meet in House of Fraser, Crowngate, she has already put away a stack of clothes for a Gokstyle capsule wardrobe. With one skirt and one pair of trousers, we make several outfits with various tops, cardigans and jumpers.
Mrs Seymour knows just what she wants for me in each shop and we only go into five. We’re done in two hours and I have five new looks.
Here’s to a fashionable winter.
