100 YEARS AGO:

ON Sunday evening, a motor car accident occurred in Foregate Street opposite the Star Hotel. A car driven by Mr Lloyd-Jones of Broadheath was being turned to go in the direction of The Cross when it skidded and ran into Thomas Jennings, aged 55, a jeweller who was walking on the footpath. He was knocked down and later taken to the infirmary in Mr Lloyd- Jones’ car. He was treated for his injuries but later allowed to go home.

􀁥 The chief attraction at our Theatre Royal next week will be the Chinese magician Chung Ling Soo who is described as the most wonderful magician in the world. His deceptions for the delight and mystification of his audiences are said to be most bewildering, each succeeding mystery being more remarkable than its predecessor. He will be supported by his wife and company in their sensational performances twice nightly.

ATTEMPTED suicide. On Saturday night, a blacksmith named Grundy, living at the back of the Tything, was brought to our infirmary in a dangerous condition, having taken a quantity of laudanum.

Grundy had been strange in his manner for some time past and had been out of work some weeks. On Saturday evening he went to nine different chemists’ shops, and at each he purchased a pennyworth of laudanum and taking it to a public house, swallowed the whole of it. He afterwards went home where he was taken so ill that he had to be conveyed to the infirmary where prompt assistance was rendered him and he rallied. He has since been removed to the asylum.

ON Wednesday, Mr Ashmore’s wagon warehouse in Angel Street, Worcester, was robbed of some goods, and on Friday two men from Birmingham were apprehended at Bromsgrove on suspicion of having committed the robbery, and though the circumstances were not so clear as to warrant their committal, a very strong suspicion attached to them.

Various articles which would probably have led to conviction were thrown into fields near the Droitwich road. Several houses in this city have been the target of attempted robberies and it is therefore necessary that the inhabitants should be particular in securing their doors etc.

A BAY stallion, newly bought at Upton-upon- Severn, formerly known by the name of Famous Scrat or Black-Legs, which is looked upon to be as fresh as a sucking-foal and as good a thoroughbred as any in England, is kept at Upton by John Husk, and the price is half a guinea a leap.
