ROYAL Mail delivery offices in Worcester and Droitwich are facing closure as part of cost-cutting proposals.

If plans get the go-ahead, workers from delivery offices in Droitwich and Worcester City would move to the Worcester Mail Centre and Delivery Office in Wainwright Road, Worcester.

As already reported, Royal Mail plans to move the sorting office operation to Birmingham.

The plans would see delivery offices closed in The Furlongs, Berry Hill industrial estate, Droitwich and Westbury Street, Worcester.

The 97 staff affected are expected to be given the chance to relocate to Wainwright Road.

However, Brendon Allen, branch secretary for the Communications Workers Union (CWU) said the union would not tolerate any compulsory redundancies and expected staff to be relocated or for voluntary redundancies to be considered.

Mr Allen said: “People are bitterly disappointed that Royal Mail rejected our counter proposals.

“Wainwright Road was one of the best performing centres in the Midlands.

“People are upset and worried and that’s why we have got to do some further work with the employer to make sure we manage it for people.”

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “It’s important to say we would like to have a facility whereby people can continue to collect their parcels locally so they wouldn’t have to go to Wainwright Road.”

Royal Mail bosses say staff numbers in the Midlands must be cut by 550 after the number of items posted each year in the region fell by more than 400 million since 2006 and is expected to fall further.

A consultation on the plans is underway with a final decision likely in October.
