UPDATED plans for redevelopment of land in the Chawson area of Droitwich have been revealed after a public consultation led to changes being made.
The improved proposal has been unveiled by Wychavon District Council and Emmanuel Church for the regeneration of the site in Blake Avenue. The scheme aims to deliver more housing, a community centre and shop, and to reduce anti-social behaviour in the area.
The major project was the subject of a public consultation at the end of last year, which has led to a variety of changes being made to the original proposals.
The Blake Avenue regeneration project now includes an improved community centre, a replacement Emmanuel Church rebuilt over the centre, an enlarged shop that will stock a wider variety of goods to meet local community needs, 15 affordable housing units including a bungalow, which will be offered on a mixture of tenure types, and a further 13 private residential units.
Droitwich Spa Housing Association has been identified as the preferred affordable housing provider for the scheme.
Following the consultation last year a number of changes have been made to the original proposals.
A three-storey block containing the affordable housing units has been redesigned to make it less imposing and more sympathetic to the appearance of the area. The number of alleyways in the area is being reduced – a move aimed at reducing concerns about anti-social behaviour.
Also in response to residents’ views, additional parking spaces have been included in the plans, including some for short-stay shoppers.
More than 100 residents attended the two consultation sessions held in the Blake Avenue community centre. There were also more than 70 online responses received at wychavon.gov. uk, plus comments from Droitwich Spa South West Residents Association, the Droitwich Spa Civic Society and Droitwich Town Council.
A planning application for the updated scheme has now been submitted by Wychavon District Council and the Emmanuel Church. Details will be available shortly at wychavon.gov. uk/planning, where residents will be able to submit their comments.
It is not yet known when the matter will be discussed by the council’s development control committee.
The site ear-marked for redevelopment is next to an area of land that has recently been secured as a “village green”, a move that will protect it against being built on. The regeneration project will not affect this site.
