ROADSIDE checks will be carried out day and night as part of a crackdown on drink-drivers this summer.

Those driving under the influence of drugs will also be targeted by police officers, who say the warmer weather generally leads to an increase in offences.

Officers say enforcement will be a key priority with checks to be done on all types of road and drivers automatically tested if they crash.

According to the Safer Roads Partnership, 63 people have been killed or seriously injured in the past three years in Worcestershire as a result of collisions involving drink or drugs.

They said young people, especially men, were over-represented in statistics.

Acting superintendent Lee Davenport said: “Cracking down on those who take drugs or drink and then drive is a year-round commitment for West Mercia.

“If you are tempted to drive under the influence of drink or drugs then spare a thought for your family, friends and other innocent road users.”
