MPS across Worcestershire are backing the campaign to find local heroes to carry the Olympic torch.

More than 8,000 people will be invited to carry the flame in a nationwide 70-day relay, which starts from Land’s End on May 19, 2012 and arrives in Worcester on May 24.

People can put forward candidates they feel have contributed to their local community on the official Olympic torch relay website.

MP for West Worcestershire Harriett Baldwin, called on her constituents to send her suggestions for who she should put forward as a torchbearer.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for people to get involved in the London Olympics,” she said.

“I know there are many worthy candidates in West Worcestershire so I am asking for people to send their application to me at the House of Commons and I will cast my nomination from this list. I look forward to helping someone in the county to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime chance to participate in the Olympics.”

Worcester MP Robin Walker said he would be looking to the volunteer and charity sector for his nomination.

“It’s a very positive thing and it’s great the Olympic committee are involving lots of people in this,” he said.

Peter Luff, MP for Mid Worcestershire, said he hoped residents in all six districts would join in with the celebrations.

“I really urge all my constituents to put their thinking caps on and suggest to the organisers of London 2012 inspirational members of the community,” he said.

“I know from travelling the length and breadth of Worcestershire just how many inspirational people there are.”
