A RETIRED district nurse who works with the Droitwich-based charity YSS (Youth Support Services) initially thought it was a hoax when she received a call asking if she would like to go to a royal garden party.
Now Margaret Phillpotts, of Worcester, is preparing for her big day in July by having a new hat made especially for the occasion at Buckingham Palace.
Mrs Phillpotts was nominated by YSS trustee Tricia Bradbury MBE and the invitation is in recognition of the seven years she has volunteered for YSS supporting young people when they are taken into custody in Worcester, Redditch or Kidderminster police stations. She has supported young people on more than 50 occasions this year alone.
“Being an appropriate adult, as it is called, is very rewarding,” said Mrs Phillpotts. “You’re there for the young person when they most need it and when no one close to them is available.
“You have no connection with the police or probation or social services so your role is simply to be supportive and non-judgemental which, sadly, for many kids is a novelty.”
YSS area volunteer co-ordinator Carole Blake said it is not only a legal requirement but important for young people in custody to have someone reassuring with them and to know that person’s sole interest is their welfare.
“In that role, Margaret has been invaluable to many young people,” she said. “She is always calm and professional even when involved with some very distressing cases.”
Mrs Phillpott’s enthusiasm for what she does has proved infectious and her husband Hugh joined to become an appropriate adult 18 months ago.
