WORCESTER’S Home Guard volunteers were honoured during a special day to recognise the role they played during the Second World War.
The Guildhall played host to the event for the veterans of the Home Guard – the group that was charged with defending the country should the Germans have invaded from 1940 until 1944 – who were welcomed into the mayor’s parlour for tea.
Meanwhile, visitors to the Guildhall could have a look at the kinds of weapons they would have used, as well as a mock-up of Worcester’s Home Guard headquarters and a display by the Defence of Worcestershire project, which has catalogued the county’s wartime defence structures.
Discover History’s Paul Harding, who helped organise the event, said: “We did this last year because it was the 70th anniversary of the creation of the Home Guard. They were really impressed they had not been forgotten so we decided to do it again this year.”
