A WOMAN who was jailed for 18 weeks for assaulting her boyfriend with a knife was released on bail hours later after launching an appeal against the sentence.
Lisa Brown was jailed by district judge David Goodman for causing Lee Green actual bodily harm.
Brown pleaded guilty to the charge at an earlier hearing at Worcester Magistrates Court and the case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report.
The judge said the purpose of the sentence was to deter people from using knives.
He said: “I take the view that this crime is so serious that only a custodial sentence is appropriate.”
Jason Patel, defending, put forward an immediate appeal against the sentence and Brown reappeared to be bailed until a hearing date is set.
Louise Mead, prosecuting, said police were called to the couple’s home address on May 1 by ambulance staff who were responding to reports a man had been stabbed.
On arrival, officers found a weeping Brown on her own downstairs before Mr Green came downstairs holding a bloodied towel to his chest. She immediately admitted she had inflicted the wound.
In an interview, Brown said the pair, who have known each other 18 years but only recently started dating, had been to a christening earlier in the day where they had drunk alcohol and continued to do so when they go home.
An argument ensued and the 32-year-old said she was pushed and her hair was pulled. She had wanted her partner to leave her alone and, to scare him off, she went into the kitchen and picked up a knife.
Brown, of Pershore Road, Evesham, put it against the right side of his chest and as Mr Green went to grab it, he was cut by the seven-inch blade.
Jason Patel, defending, said Brown was not an alcoholic but she admitted to being an habitual drinker, favouring one or two glasses of wine after work.
He said: “[Brown] made a full and frank admission to the police.
“The injured party has not provided a complaint. She accepts that she went and got the knife, but this was merely to scare him.”
He said his client was remorseful and her instinctive reaction was to call for an ambulance, even after her partner asked her not to.
A date for the appeal hearing is not yet known.
