AFTER more than two years on the transplant list, a county man has finally received the new kidney he needs – courtesy of his mum.

Caine Richards and his mum Tina both underwent surgery on Monday and are now recovering at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Caine, aged 24, suffered from kidney failure two years ago and has since had three dialysis sessions, lasting four hours each, every week.

His father Paul said: “They don’t know why it happened, but he was 21 at the time and it has had a massive impact on his life.

“He was put on the transplant list and when that had gone on for a couple of years without success, Tina decided to see if she could help.”

Medical experts had to carry out tests to establish whether the organ would be compatible before going ahead with the transplant.

Mr Richards said: “We didn’t have any doubts at all that it was the right thing to do. It is just the sort of thing that a mother would do for her son.”

Doctors are pleased with the progress both are making and hope that Mrs Richards, 54, will be able to return to the family home in Delamere Road, Malvern, within days.

Caine will have to remain in hospital longer, but the family are already looking forward to him hopefully resuming a normal life.

Mr Richards said: “This will have a major impact on my son’s life. He was a tree surgeon before the problems and obviously he has not been able to do so since.

He is looking forward to hopefully going back to that and he is extremely grateful for what Tina has done.”
