A British National Party candidate came close to getting a seat on a Worcester parish council for the first time – only missing out because of a technicality.

Carl Mason had wanted to stand for Warndon Parish Council at the recent local elections after several of its existing members stood down.

With fewer candidates than the number of vacancies he looked set to get a seat uncontested, but his application was rejected after he failed to produce the paperwork to prove his affiliation with the BNP.

It is unusual for a parish councillor to be affiliated with a political party.

A spokesman for Worcester City Council said: “It would be the same whatever party he had applied for if he did not have that party’s consent.”

Mr Mason, of Keble Close, Warndon, was one of three candidates nominated for the eight seats on the council.

He said: “I don’t think being a parish counillor you need to show your party colours.”

His was nominated by a D Ritchie, but neither the parish council nor city council could provide more details.

The other two candidates, Steve Mackay and Nick Fielden, were elected uncontested and Ray Morris, Marc Bayliss, Val Barrall and Ted Holloway were all re-elected.

Mr Mason could still join the council as it is still looking to fill the two remaining seats.

At the council’s first meeting after the election, county councillor Andy Roberts urged members to “encourage worthy candidates”.
