IF Warriors win promotion to the Aviva Premiership tonight it will not only lead to rampant cheering in the stands, but could mean a major boost to Worcestershire’s economy.

The added value to the county of a rugby side playing in the country’s top flight against the likes of Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints, could be hundreds of thousands of pounds, according to the club and business chiefs.

As if there were not enough pressure on the Sixways’ dressing room when players boot up for the final clash of the season against Cornish Pirates tonight, hard economics mean a win will be a victory for the county.

Everyone from hotel owners to taxi drivers will have extra reason to cheer the players’ demolition of the Pirates.

Charlie Little, Warriors’ general manager, said as well as a boost in ticket sales from about 6,000 to 10,000 per home game the club would expect added value benefits, with extra revenue from its conferencing and event-hosting.

The club said another knock-on effect would be a rise in away fans visiting Worcester and the wider county, benefiting hotels, cab firms, restaurants and the wider night-time economy, with people making a weekend of a trip to Sixways.

“Away fans will be travelling here from places like Leicester and London and they may well choose to make a weekend of it,” he said.

“We’ll be in European competition and in the past had people from France, Spain and Italy and they will want to stop in the county.

“Not to mention the national media coverage Worcester will get in the sports newspapers and through televised games – owner Cecil Duckworth’s vision was to create Worcester as a rugby city.”

Gary Woodman, of Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, said promotion would raise the national profile of the city and bring increased revenue to both city and county.

“You’re getting revenue from visiting away fans staying here, or visiting before and after the games.

“And you can’t argue with the exposure in the national news pages from the sporting fixtures.

“There’s benefits for all.

“Warriors also attract new home fans from the West Midlands, as looking north there’s no other top flight rugby union side between here, Sale and Leicester.”
