A LONG-AWAITED by-election has been announced for the last vacant council seat in south Worcestershire.

The Elmley Castle and Somerville ward by-election for Wychavon District Council will be held on Thursday, June 23.

The seat has been vacant since the death of Conservative councillor Anna Mackison in March.

She had fought a brave battle against cancer.

Notice of election was published today and the deadline for candidates’ nominations is noon on Thursday, May 26.

Voters who wish to register to vote must do so by Wednesday, June 8 while Wednesday, June 15, is the deadline for proxy vote applications Polling stations in the ward will be open from 7am to 10pm on election day.

The outcome of the by-election will not materially affect the political make-up of Wychavon, which currently has 38 Conservatives, five Liberal Democrats and one Labour councillor.
