A FORMER lorry driver caught drink-driving on Easter Sunday was feeling low as it was the anniversary of his mother’s death.
Michael Clements had to leave his job as a driver because of his diabetes and was now in a job that left him feeling isolated and depressed, Worcester Magistrates Court was told.
Clements, aged 58, of Brewers Lane, Badsey, near Evesham, admitted drink-driving. He had 84mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit is 35mcg.
Sarah Stock, prosecuting, said Clements was pulled over because one of his brake lights was not working.
Brian O’Connell, defending, said Clements’s diabetes had previously been under control but 18 months ago he had to go on a high-level insulin and was given a security job watching the lorry park.
Mr O’Connell said: “Due to the loneliness of his new job he started drinking.
“He is dealing with depression by the way of alcohol.
“Easter Sunday is a very grim day for him, because his mother had died on an Easter Sunday.
“He has not drunk since this incident.”
Clements was fined £350 and disqualified for 20 months. He was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
