TWO people have been killed in an accident which has bought the M5 to a standstill.
The driver and passenger of a Mercedes, which was travelling south between junction three and four, were killed when an HGV crossed the central reservation at about 11.38am.
The driver of the lorry has been taken to hospital with what are thought to be minor injuries.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “Despite the best efforts of ambulance crews arriving on scene, nothing could be done to save the two casualties and they were confirmed dead shortly after the arrival of the emergency services.
“The driver of the lorry was found to be trapped in his cab. He was later released with the help of ambulance crews and firefighters, before being treated for arm and neck injuries.
"He was immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board before being taken to Worcester Hospital for further assessment and treatment”.
The southbound carriageway remains completely shut, while two lanes on the northbound carriageway have since reopened.
The incident is not expected to be cleared for some time as parts of the wrecked barrier and the lorry are across the southbound carriageway.
Police, Fire and ambulance services were assisted by officers from the Highways Agency.
Mik Barton, spokesman for the Highways Agency, said: "It is a very serious accident.
"The next step will be a police investigation and after that then we can clear the debris.
"The lorry and barrier is across the carriageway, and the HGV will need lifting out of the way as it is severely damaged.
"It is always busy around there on a Friday afternoon and we also have the Malvern Flower Show today.
"We would advise people to try and find a different way home."
A diversion has been implemented with northbound traffic advised to leave the M5 at J4 and follow the "solid black circle" diversion route signs. Southbound traffic is advised to leave the M5 at J3 and follow the "solid black diamond" diversion route signs.
More to follow.
- The incident is being investigated by officers of the Central Motorway Police Group. Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact the Police on 0121-626-1285 and quote incident number 902 of 13/05/11.
