A DRUNK man who was “exceptionally violent” injured two police officers and damaged a car when he resisted arrest.

Paul Rothan, aged 44, of Preece Close, Malvern, admitted two counts of assaulting a police officer in the execution of his or her duty and one of criminal damage when he appeared before magistrates in Worcester on Tuesday.

Police were called to reports of a domestic assault at 5.28pm on Sunday, May 8.

Mark Johnson, prosecuting, said when police arrived Rothan ran off in the direction of Duke of Edinburgh Way in Malvern pursued by police officers.

Mr Johnson said the car was damaged as Rothan struggled against three officers trying to arrest him.

He said: “There is a temporary cessation in the struggle but when the officers go to place cuffs on him he resumes his struggle. He’s described as being exceptionally violent.”

A female police officer brought out CS spray and warned him he would be sprayed. In her statement she said he hit her in the face on both sides and also attempted to butt her.

A male officer was struck to the left side of his face and also observed Rothan try to butt the female officer.

The male officer suffered swelling to his right hand between the second and third knuckle, a mark below the left eye, a cut to the side of his face, swelling and redness to the neck.

The female officer suffered a cut to her wrist and a cut to her face and the officers were also sworn at Mr Johnson said.

The damage to the car is still being established but Mr Johnson said it had scratches to the nearside front and rear doors.

Mr Johnson said the offence was also committed while Rothan was on bail for another, similar matter on Wednesday, April 27, during which he used “a tirade of foul and abusive racist language” against a police officer and was charged with a public order offence.

Rob Macrory, defending, said Rothan was in a long- term relationship and his partner called police about his behaviour around six times a year but then routinely refused to make a statement to the police.

He said: “His behaviour on arrest has always been in drink and born out of frustration towards the police officers arresting him. For his part he accepts his behaviour was disgusting and wrong.”

Rothan was remanded in custody until the next court hearing on Friday, May 27, when he is scheduled to be sentenced.

Magistrates ordered the preparation of an all-options pre-sentence report which includes the possibility of prison.
