KIND-HEARTED readers have come forward to donate fishing equipment to a Worcester schoolboy who had all his gear stolen from his shed.

As reported yesterday, 12-year-old Lewis Portman was devastated when burglars struck at his garden in Borrowdale Drive, Warndon, last week.

The Tudor Grange Academy pupil also had a £650 mini motorbike stolen during the raid.

Mum Tina said her son was particularly upset at losing his prized equipment as he suffers from ADHD and fishing helps keep him calm.

After reading the story in your Worcester News a number of people have contacted the paper to offer Lewis spare rods, reels, nets and accessories.

Dave Cox, of Shakespeare Road, Dines Green, Worcester, was more than happy to help out.

The 56-year-old said: “The same thing happened to me a few years ago so when I read what had happened to this young man I really wanted to help.

“I’ve got a practically brand new rod and reel which I don’t really use anymore so thought I would pass them on.”

Gordon Blunstone, aged 63, of Hanley Castle, has got a whole range of equipment which Lewis can have. He said: “When you see a story like that where people have shown no consideration for others it makes you want to help out if you can.

“I have got loads of stuff which he can have which should help him get back out there fishing again.”

John Keevil, of William Tennant Way, Upton-upon-Severn, has a host of pole fishing gear which he doesn’t use anymore.

The 58-year-old said: “I saw the story and thought it was really sad what had happened. I gave up fishing about 12 months ago so thought I would give all my gear to someone who needs it.”

Mrs Portman was overcome with emotion when she heard about the generous offers.

She said: “It is absolutely brilliant. Lewis is over the moon. I would like to personally thank all the people who have come forward from the bottom of my heart.

“It is so thoughtful of them to give away their things like this.

“It just goes to show that there are still some really kind-hearted people out there.”

Anyone who has been offered fishing equipment or a yellow mini motorbike for sale under suspicious circumstances is asked to call police on 0300 3333000 quoting 540/S/070511.
