A THIEF has been given three months to prove himself after “drastically” reducing his criminal activity.
Steven Smith pleaded guilty at Worcester Magistrates Court to stealing a bottle of men’s fragrance from Boots in High Street, Worcester, on Friday, April 15.
Louise Mead, prosecuting, said the 29-year-old took the item after his card was declined.
He told police he had stolen it on the “spur of the moment”.
He had £20 cash on him and was going to use the fragrance himself.
Mark Lister, defending, said Smith had only appeared in court once since an 18-month prison sentence in July, 2007.
“He was a heroin addict for many years but he is not now using any illicit drugs and has returned home to live with his parents,” Mr Lister said.
“I have known Steven Smith and his family for many years and his father is a good influence.”
District judge Bruce Morgan deferred sentencing Smith, of Roberts End, Hanley Swan, until Friday, August 12, to give him a chance.
“If you keep out of trouble, then when you come back to court it will impose punishment which does not include custody,” he said.
