ONE star, two characters – Marti Pellow was the split personality doctor as Dr Henry Jekyll and Mr Edward Hyde in Robert Louis Stevenson’s gothic novella.

The musical tells the story of scientist Jekyll with his sadistic alter ego a decent man by day and that of Hyde who at night turns into a monster following experiments with his own potion that brings terror across Victorian London ruthlessly killing anyone from prostitutes to corrupt bishops.

An impressive set that changed seamlessly between scenes that included, Jekyll’s Laboratory, the Streets of London always featuring St Paul’s Cathedral in the background.

Pellow, well known as the lead singer of eighties group Wet Wet Wet has a great voice - rich and silky, full of warmth and emotion. Praise to his leading ladies for their powerful performances understudy Caroline Maitland (Lucy) and Sarah Earnshaw (Emma).

Whilst I am a big fan of musicals the number of sung conversations in Act 1 did not appeal which as a result I found myself drifting at times… however, following the interval I was riveted as Act 2 unfolded chilling, intense and blood curdling.

The appreciative audience applauded warmly at the end with devoted Pellow followers on their feet.

A musical with a difference runs until Saturday, 14th May at the Bristol Hippodrome.
