AN unusual guest has joined Worcester school pupils for lunch.

The Chinese lion performed a traditional dance through the canteen at Christopher Whitehead Language College as part of a celebration of Chinese New Year.

Youngsters were transfixed as the colourful lion performed the dance on stage before jumping down to dance among them as they ate their lunch.

The college’s Juliet Palmer, international co-ordinator, said: “We have international school status and part of that is making the pupils aware we are global citizens.

“We do various activities and because we started teaching Mandarin in school this year we really wanted to celebrate the Chinese New Year.”

The performance was organised by the school’s catering team, eat smart educatering, which has also showcased different Chinese meals every day.

The lion dance was performed by members of the Kui de Tang centre in Barbourne Road, the Tything.

The centre’s James Rodriguez said the dance was often performed by martial arts experts because it was so energetic.

Chinese New Year started on Thursday, February 3, and lasts for 15 days.
