THE internet has in so many ways opened our eyes to the wonders of the world.

We now have a tool through which we can communicate to people across the globe and access a limitless depository of knowledge and entertainment media.

Our children are understandably entranced by the internet.

We are right to encourage them to use it given the central role it is likely to play in their lives.

But like so many developments that have enriched our society, there are warped individuals who misuse it.

Children in particular are vulnerable to those who go online to bully, exploit, intimidate and groom for abuse.

And so we wholeheartedly welcome and endorse West Mercia Police’s efforts during Internet Safety Awareness Week.

They are introducing an online character called Wes (Worcestershire E Safety), who will help them promote their messages about staying safe online.

It is important, though, not to underplay the role parents play in ensuring that their children are using the internet sensibly, and that they are aware of its dangers.

It is simply not acceptable to allow youngsters unfettered access without being comfortable with the websites they are viewing and the people with whom they are interacting.

In this respect, parental supervision in the online world should be no less vigilant than that in the physical one.
