AN MP has visited a nature reserve created on land used to build flood defences.

Harriett Baldwin, who represents West Worcestershire, went to the John Bennett Nature Reserve at Manor Farm, Birlingham, near Pershore, which is being developed after a large amount of clay was removed for the town’s £900,000 flood defences.

The 24-hectare site is part of an project along the river Avon to protect the habitats of local wildlife. A hide has been built for birdwatchers.

Mrs Baldwin said: “Flood defences are very important to protect local homes and businesses. It is interesting to see how the Environment Agency worked together with Natural England so the area got not only a flood defence but also a nature reserve. The clay travelled by barge along the river Avon thus minimising the environmental impact.”
