THE guild met to hear Di Chester’s talk on Japanese sashiko.
Di first became interested in sashiko five years ago.
The word sashiko means little stabs, and describes the stitches used.
Originating in Japan, sashiko was used to join layers of fabric together for winter clothing, and, more specifically, for firemens’ clothing, where it is soaked in water.
Nowadays, it is an art form, and the patterns are based on heraldic themes and special thread, fabric, extra-long needles and traditional scissors are available.
Di has created a number of beautiful wrapping cloths which are used to wrap presents but, traditionally, the cloth is returned to the donor.
She has also designed her own patterns, producing sashiko denim shoulder bags, and using bridal fabrics in conjunction with sashiko to decorate quilts and cushions.
The next meeting is on Tuesday, March 1, when we welcome the return of Fiona Starky, who, together with Nigel Manley, will be Dressing Tudor Man.
