ON-call firefighters are needed in Bromyard to keep the retained fire service operating 24-hours a day.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is looking for new recruits following recent retirements and staff movements.

The town’s fire station is in particular need of people to provide daytime and weekend fire and rescue cover.

The station has 17 retained firefighters but extra cover would enable them to offer their services at all hours of the day.

Simon Halling, who has been a retained firefighter and crew commander in Bromyard for 20 years, said: “It’s important to the community for us to be able to turn out quickly in the area.

"We need on-call recruits when we are short-staffed during the day and at weekends, they will help keep us going.”

Neil Lilwall, station commander, said: “Many employers have supported their communities by releasing staff to become on-call firefighters.

"The role can sit well alongside a wide range of jobs or responsibilities, with the individual benefiting from an additional salary, training and personal satisfaction.”

Applicants must live or work within about five minutes of the fire station and be aged over 18.
