WORK on improving Droitwich’s gas network is expected to begin this month as parts of the town are closed to traffic.

National Grid is to start work on renewing an old gas main in the town’s High Street on Monday, February 21.

The £2 million work is expected to take six weeks to complete.

High Street will be closed to through traffic between the junctions of Queen Street and Friar Street.

Shops and businesses in High Street will remain open throughout.

Engineers will work six days a week from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, to complete work on time.

Paul Thompson, National Grid project manager, said: “We appreciate that roadworks are not popular but I ask the public to please bear with us.

"This is essential work that will ensure the town continues to enjoy a safe and reliable gas supply.”

This work is part of a major project to replace more than 20 miles of old metal gas mains and replace them with new hard-wearing plastic pipe.

If undisturbed, the new pipe will last for up to 80 years and will need little or no maintenance.
