A WORCESTERSHIRE man is preparing to run through the Hills of Hell to raise money for two charities working in the county.

Garry Smith will be one of 2,000 competitors taking part in the Hell in the Middle event in Cannock Chase, Staffordshire, on Saturday, February 12.

Mr Smith, aged 43, is facing up to the challenges of the Hills of Hell and Bog of Doom in the 12-mile multi-terrain race to raise money for St Richard’s Hospice and the Prince’s Trust.

Mr Smith is a partner in Droitwich-based business Century 2000, which has been a corporate sponsor of the Trust for four years.

He said: “St Richard’s Hospice provides an invaluable service to the local community, caring for people with life-limiting conditions and supporting their families.”

Every penny donated will not only go to worthwhile causes, but also help ease the pain of taking part in such a tough challenge.

For, while Mr Smith, who lives at Holly Green, near Upton, keeps himself fit through running, gym sessions and racing Ducati 1,000cc motorcycles.

He has admitted work and family have meant he hasn’t had much time to work out during the last few years.

He said: “I’ve never done any off-road running before so factoring in the rough terrain and uphill and down dale sections, I’d be pleased to finish inside three hours.”
