A GAS engineer who was carrying out a safety check on a Worcester pub was almost four times the legal drink-drive limit.
Derek McHugh, aged 55, was found to have 126mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit is 35mcg – after he arrived at the Pheasant Inn, New Street, Worcester.
Liam Finch, prosecuting, said: “The proprietor was concerned as he was clearly drunk. He stopped him carrying out the check and prevented him from leaving.”
Police were called and McHugh admitted driving to the pub.
Chris Hilton, defending, said McHugh recognised he had an alcohol problem.
He said: “He is regretful and is seeking assistance to his alcohol problem.
“He does apologise and understands the consequences of his actions.”
McHugh, of Longmeadow Grove, Birmingham, was sentenced to three months in custody, suspended for 12 months, with a 12-month supervision requirement.
He was disqualified from driving for four years and ordered to pay £85 costs.
