100 YEARS AGO:

A VIOLENT prisoner. Eliza Oliver, pedlar of no fixed abode was summonsed at Worcester County Police Court for being drunk and disorderly at Kempsey and also assaulting PC James in the execution of his duty.

The officer said the woman was lying on the ground using filthy language. She pulled the buttons off her coat and took the hatpin out to stab him. She was kicking and biting on the way to Worcester and the assistance of a city police officer had to be got near the city as she was behaving indecently. The prisoner was fined five shillings, or seven days’ prison in default, for the first offence and was sentenced to three weeks’ hard labour for the second.

150 YEARS AGO:

HONESTY again unrewarded. A gold watch was on Saturday morning picked up at the Cross by Evan Davis, a French polisher of Copenhagen Street, Worcester. A lady had just passed and Davis, imagining the watch to be her property, restored it to her but she did not even acknowledge his honesty by a “thank you. Subsequently, Davis being in doubt as to whether he had given it to the right owner, made further inquiries of the lady, when she rewarded him with a shilling for his honesty and for all the trouble he had been put to.

200 YEARS AGO:

YESTERDAY, a horse which was drawing a dray near Worcester bridge, by making a sudden turn, precipitated itself into the river with the dray and was drowned before it could be extricated.

● His Majesty’s ship Satellite, commanded by Captain Robert Evans, which lately arrived at Plymouth from the West Indies and Havana, brought over a large quantity of specie from the latter place.

Captain Evans is a native of Worcestershire and has been very active against the enemy.

250 YEARS AGO:

STOLEN from near the windmill about half-a-mile from Worcester on Sunday last, two cows and a red heifer. Whoever can give intelligence of the said beasts to William Hartwright of Timberdine near Worcester shall receive a reward of one guinea and all reasonable charges, and on giving information of the person or persons who stole the same, shall on the conviction thereof receive a further four guineas.
