A NEW café and bookshop run by the charity Head-way to provide experience for people recovering from brain injuries is getting ready to throw its doors open to the public at the end of the month.

Headway was established in Malvern in 1989 to care for people with acquired brain injuries and the organisation works with about 200 people at any one time.

Now the charity is preparing for the opening of its new bookshop in Worcester's Lowesmoor, with the café next door expected to open shortly afterwards in mid-August.

About 40 people entered a competition to name both venues, with the winning names for the café and bookshop being Chapters and Pages.

Director Shirley Atkins-Thompson said the recent flash floods had caused setbacks as the property had been flooded. However, all that was needed now for the project to be completed was the installation of shelving in the bookshop and furniture and crockery in the café.

She added: "It looks really lovely and we're pleased that it's almost complete because it's been a long journey for us.

"We thought it would be ready last year but because it's a listed building there were lots of difficulties."

Headway also has a day centre in Gregory's Mill Street, Worcester, together with a recycling shop, workshop and base for community workers.

It also manages houses, flats and bungalows which are owned by housing associations in Wor-cester, Evesham and Malvern.

The charity is looking for a manager and assistant manager for the café who have cooking skills and an empathy with people who are vulnerable.

Volunteers are also needed to help run the bookshop, as are books, which can be taken to their base of Gregory's Mill Street between 10am and 3pm. Headway can be contacted on 01905 729729.
