A YOUNG people's club which was set up in an old wartime hut in Worcester is enjoying a golden period as it prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Perdiswell Young People's Leisure Club was established in Perdiswell Park in Worcester's in 1976 by city resident Phil Weston - now its development manager - and city councillor Mike Layland. After three years of dedicated fund-raising, sufficient funds were raised to build a new base for the club, which was completed in 1989.

Over the years, the club, which organises a wide range of activities, has gone from strength to strength and also had a couple of extensions as it has grown. It now has between 60 and 120 youngsters attend each day to join in the fun. The venue also has a skate park, runs events including sports sessions, music, theatre, cookery and art-based activities, as well as arranging trips out. It is aimed at youngsters aged between seven and 21 years old.

Over the summer period it is opening its doors seven days a week from 10am to 9.30pm to entertain youngsters and is planning several trips out for members.

The club is also planning a big celebratory event on Friday August 18, with a barbecue, disco and other activities, to mark their anniversary.

Youth development worker worker Ross Cormack said they were delighted with how it had grown over the years and now hoped to get more youngsters coming along. He said: "We've got a formula that's working and obviously there's a lot of people who skate so that boosts the numbers.

"To get at least 60 people a day is more than a lot of clubs would get throughout the summer so we're delighted, but we still feel there are some youngsters who don't know about us as well who might want to come along."

During the summer, the club is also organising further barbecues and hoping to host food and first aid workshops in conjunction with Worcester College of Technology and St John Ambulance respectively. Worcester Action for Youth has also arranged activities at the club for Tuesday, August 8 and Tuesday, August 22.
