IT's not just the barmy weather giving a Worcester park something to celebrate this summer.

Worcester Woods Country Park, in Spetchley, has once again been recognised for its high standard and has retained its Green Flag - the equivalent to the Blue Flag for beaches.

The site, managed by Worcestershire County Council, was praised for having high-quality visitor facilities and good links to the local community.

And if that's not enough, the countryside centre, in the park reopened on Thursday, July 20, after a recent refurbishment.

It now hosts a larger cafe with improved kitchen facilities, new community meeting rooms and a shaded area for picnickers.

The environmentally-friendly building includes a wood-fuelled boiler, a grass roof and insulation made from recycled newspapers.

Councillor Derek Prodger, cabinet member for environment, said: "The country park deserves every plaudit for getting this award again.

"This highlights how effectively and efficiently the Countryside Service manages its sites.

"Appreciation and thanks goes out to all the staff and everybody involved, including a special thanks to our visitors who continue to visit."

The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces. Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag status.

Worcester Woods Country Park is the only Green Flag site in Worcester.
