A CHILDREN'S playground in a village near Worcester has been shortlisted out of hundreds of entries for the chance to win a £10,000 makeover.

Berryfields Children's playground in Broadwas is one of the final eight in Goodyear's hunt for the playground in most need of an overhaul.

It was nominated by the chairman of the parish council, Peter Langard, who said: "It is very old-fashioned and doesn't get used as much as it should, because of the safety aspect. The parish council had looked at the cost of reinstating it to modern standards, but it would cost more than the council could manage."

He urged people to vote for Broadwas on the company's website www.drivehomesafely.com, where the eight finalists are pictured. The playground that receives the most votes will win an overhaul, sponsored by Goodyear, using recycled tyres.

Corporate communications manager James Bailey said: "We have had entries from all over the UK. It is now down to the general public to decided which playground scoops the funds. This is a fitting project for us, as more than three million Goodyear tyres a year are recycled for use in sports and recreational surfaces. En-vironmental responsibility is an area we are continuing to develop."
