Temperatures are set to beat holiday resorts such as Ibiza today as Worcestershire has its hottest day of the year and the county is set for a scorching rest of the summer.

But the glorious sunshine is likely to bring a sting in the tail, with high risks of flash flooding as seen earlier this month bringing potential chaos once again.

Temperatures up to 34C (93F) degrees Celsius are forecast for today by Worcester News weatherman Paul Damari, beating temperatures in Ibiza, the Canary Islands and the French Riviera.

Mr Damari said the searing temperatures will continue tomorrow, but this spell of exceptionally hot weather would begin to break on Wednesday night with the potential for thundery storms.

He said: "The pattern when we have weather like this is high-level short-lived thunderstorms and these can be very intense and localised."

"We should have slightly cooler air by Thursday, with temperatures about 22C, but the pattern is when we have very hot spells like this for more hot spells to reoccur throughout the summer."

He said that the current heatwave is unlikely to beat the hottest recorded day in Worcester, which was August 3, 1990, when the mercury hit a sizzling 36.8C (98.24F).

However, he didn't rule out the record being broken this summer.

"When we have weather patterns like this August tends to be the hotter month and there will be more very hot spells this summer." The Met Office's Solar UV Index is six or seven for most of England and Wales for the first three days of the week.

A rating of seven means that the risk of damage to your skin if you are fair and burn is very high, if you are fair and tan it is high, and if you are brown or black it is medium.

Bookmaker William Hill said it stood to pay out £100,000 if temperatures hit the 100F mark (38 degrees Celsius). Back in August 2003 a record temperature of 38.1C (100.58F) was achieved in Gravesend, Kent.

Hills have slashed the price of temperatures topping 100F from 6/1 a week ago to 5/4.
