VALE butchers were bringing home the bacon after a highly successful competition in Malvern.

Hunt Brothers, of Defford, won five categories and Fladbury Pies and Sausages also secured a win at the Mid West Regional Roadshow for Butchers.

The event, organised by the British Pig Executive (BPEX), featured 27 butchers from across Worcestershire showcasing more than 220 products. It took place at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern.

Hunt Brothers won two awards in the traditional pork sausage category, as well as taking top honours in the speciality pork sausage, home-cured bacon and home-cured gammon section.

The win was particularly sweet, as it was the first time the firm had entered.

Chris Hunt said: "As a new business, it's amazing to have industry recognition so early on. Never in our wildest dreams did I think we would do so well.

"We are all self-taught, raise and produce our own herd of pigs and currently sell our products through a local farm shop.

"Sales are going through the roof, so we hope to be able to open our own shop in the near future."

Fladbury Pies and Saus-ages won its gold award in the ready meal category for a Moroccan tagine.
