SIR - Now even the Blair regime is worried by the negative consequences of mass migration of cheap foreign workers into Britain.
According to a leaked Home Office report a huge rise in immigration from Eastern Europe next year could cause chaos in schools and hospitals and spark a public backlash.
The report talks of social discord as workers' wages are depressed with ministers fearing a deepening crisis when Romania and Bulgaria join the EU in 2007 heralding a wave of potentially several hundred thousand additional poor workers from these two accession countries.
The document, by the junior Home Office minister Joan Ryan and entitled Migration From Eastern Europe: Impact on Public Services and Community Cohesion, reveals that every government department has been ordered to draw up contingency plans to deal with the extra pressure on schools, housing and health.
Schools will be under pressure, with thousands of children arriving here unable to speak English and the health service will struggle to cope with Eastern European patients who "block" hospital beds because they are ineligible for social care and benefits if they leave.
The leaked document, marked 'Restricted', was written by Ms Ryan on July 19, the day after she submitted a report saying that 45,000 'undesirable' criminal migrants from Romania and Bulgaria may settle in Britain next year.
Labour ministers created the mess so now, having awoken to the fact that the crisis isn't going to go away by itself, just what are the Blairites going to do about this?
