WORCESTERSHIRE seniors tasted defeat for the first time this year when they lost 10-8 to Warwickshire at Harborne Golf Club.
They started well, winning the morning greensomes 4-2 but Warwickshire took control in the afternoon, winning the first two matches.
Stuart Bird and Vic Pailing won their match to keep Worcestershire in the tie. They were four holes up with six to play and stood on the 18th tee all square, thanks to a birdie barrage from Ron Edmonson and John Cham-bers.
But, on the difficult par three last hole, Pailing managed to conjure up a winning birdie.
The baking heat took it's toll in the afternoon and Mike Dayus couldn't play because he was unwell.
Willie Kerr and Brian Morris thought they were in for an easy ride but John Cryer made them fight hard for a win. He had five birdies in his round and eventually lost by two holes.
The match result rested on the last game out between Alan Pugh and Alan Davison against the Warwickshire captain Frank Wallinton and Neil Stewart.
It went to the 18th and Wallinton played a captain's role to win the hole and secure a win for Warwickshire.
Pugh was unlucky to lose both his matches on the 18th -- to Wallinton and Stewart.
Mary Horobin and Pat Catlin of The Worcestershire had the best gross with a 91 in the county foursomes at Hagley Golf Club.
The best nett score was 69, produced by Hagley pair Bethan Wilson and Pauline Hacket.
They were closely followed by June Jones and Corrinne Mills of The Worcestershire with a 74 1/2 nett and Joan Harvey and Libby Nicholl of the Droitwich club with a 76 nett.
