Sitting under the oak trees in front of Staunton and Corse CE School on a glorious summer day, over 100 children, together with parents and friends, saw Rosie Miller, headteacher, performing her duties for the last time, as she ends ten happy years at the school.

Welcoming everyone, Mrs Miller said it was a lovely time of celebration. On sale was garden produce from the school's own garden but, without Bob Crockett, the produce would not be there. Three cheers were given for Bob!

Bob is also a poet and he gave the prizes for the poetry competition, which had been judged by him and Canon Evans. Competition results: Poetic Picture, Reception Class 1 - Emma Harley (cup and certificate); Year 1: Oliver Larkin (cup); Year 2: Megan Jones (cup); Year 3: Gemma Gimmet; Year 4: Ella Newbould; Year 5: Georgia Frimley; Year 6: Charlotte Knight. Charlotte read her lovely poem, The Abandoned Garden, and received the Rosie Miller Cup.

Canon Evans said he had read every poem and enjoyed them. He said: "As well as celebrating the children's garden display, we are also celebrating Mrs Miller's ten years as head."

On behalf of everyone, he thanked her for all her very hard work.

Former chairman of the school governors, Tony Fardon, also paid tribute to Mrs Miller for a marvellous job well done and wished her well.

Sue Giles, teacher, introduced the children from each class, who presented Mrs Miller with cards, gift tokens for garden furniture (tables and chairs) and a large bouquet of flowers.

In thanking everyone, Mrs Miller said she had had ten wonderful years and thanked the whole community.

It had been a wonderful place to work and the community had made it what it is, she said.

The whole staff and the governors had been extremely supportive over the years and also the PTFA, and the children were a lovely bunch of young people.

During the afternoon, the children gave a spendid display of maypole dancing, and tea and cakes were on hand for everyone.
