THIS year's Welland Steam Rally was the best yet, say organisers.

The event at Woodside Farm drew thousands of steam engine enthusiasts from all over the UK.

David Prout, chairman of show organisers, Ross-on-Wye Steam Engine Society, said: "It was the best show we've ever done, both financially and for the number of people there."

"I should think there were 4,000 exhibits in all: steam engines, cars, motorbikes, military vehicles and a lot more."

Crowds were able to see vintage traction engines in action, alongside demonstrations of steam ploughing, log cutting and other skills.

One steam buff even drove all the way down from Scotland with his engine on a low loader to show it off.

A sale on the site was a great success, with items including an antique fire engine being sold.

On Saturday night, The Wurzels performed and the sky was illuminated by a firework display.

"The weather was just right," said Mr Prout. "Even when it rained, it was just enough to keep the dust down."

The show is in its 42nd year and was originally held at Much Marcle. In subsequent years, it was held at the Three Counties Showground and at Upton before the society bought the land where it is now held 13 years ago.

Organisers have scarcely had time to put their feet up before it's time to think about the 2007 festival.

"My wife said we've already had one phone call from a trader wanting to book a stall for next year," said Mr Prout.
