The action of the General Purposes Committee in attempting to retain all the grass that remains on Merstow Green will commend itself to the burgesses of Evesham and particularly to the residents of that part of the town. It is not so many years ago that Merstow Green was really a green and exceedingly pretty it looked. The fact that it became the playground of the National School soon destroyed all the grass, first near the school and then all over the Green till all that remains is the small patch opposite the Almonry which the Borough Surveyor is now trying to preserve. It is a good move to keep all shows off this spot, but it will also be necessary to keep the children away too, for from past experience it appears that they will not be satisfied while a blade of grass remains.

For upwards of 60 years the Burlingham family have been annually introducing a ray of sunshine into the lives of the inmates of the Evesham Poor Law Institution by entertaining them at an excellent, tea, supper and concert, and as far as Miss E. M. Burlingham can recollect, the event has never been visited by bad weather. She laughingly remarked that perhaps a special Providence influenced the occasion and possibly there is more in that than some sceptical people would believe, The event is certainly deserving of a special providence for this year's entertainment , held on Thursday at Lansdowne, the residence of Miss Burlingham, was a most delightful function. Miss Burlingham was heartily thanked by her guests on the proposition of the Mayor (Mr. Richard White), seconded by Mr. Henry Masters, and she replied how great a pleasure she derived from entertaining the old people.

The 55th annual show of Badsey Horticultural Society on Saturday was one of the most successful. There were over 850 entries-nearly 100 more than last year. In the flower, fruit and vegetable classes there was a much larger entry than in previous years and the quality of the exhibits, particularly the flowers, was extremely high. For the second year running the championship cup for the most points in all the classes was won by F. Stewart and Sons Ltd., Badsey (99); second was R.V. Jones, Badsey (37) and third Mr. A.W. Sparrow, Badsey (33). The challenge cup for the most successful exhibitor in the local classes went to Messrs F. Stewart and Sons (81 points) for the third year in succession. Mr A. W. Sparrow (30) was runner-up and Mr R. V. Jones (29) was third.
