A DRAPER from headless Cross was charged with not sounding his bell or whistle when cycling in Bromsgrove Road, Webheath, in July. He pleaded not guilty.

Police constable White said at 7.55pm he was walking down the middle of the road when he heard something behind him.

On looking, defendant passed him on a bicycle. Witness had the presence of mind to step to the left or he should have been knocked down.

The left side of the defendant's jacket caught his arm.

Defendant rang no bell to signal he was approaching. Witness called him but he did not stop.

Another witness who said she was reading a newspaper said she did not hear the policeman shout. But she said the cyclist was not going fast.

Defendant said he was an experienced cyclist and he never had any charge brought against him.

After some further remarks between the bench, solicitor and witness, the magistrates said there was a doubt about the case and it was dismissed.
