RECKLESS anglers are responsible for killing and maiming swans throughout the county according the woman who runs Wychbold Swan Rescue Centre.

Jan Harrigan said she is exasperated by the amount of injured birds her workforce is having to deal with, especially since the summer began.

She said: "I'm totally fed up and we are running out of money because of the carelessness of anglers leaving hooks and netting that gets snagged up.

"I really do fear for the future of swans because of this.

"The anglers should make a contribution because it is their actions that are costing so much money. It costs around £97 to have swans x-rayed and the hook removed, not to mention the cost of us then looking after them until they have recovered.

"All this because of total recklessness. The real cost is enormous and we are having real trouble dealing with this problem and really do need contributions to help us care for the swans."

She said she believed the exceptionally hot start to summer was partially behind the increase in injuries, with more people taking to the county's waterways and problems also with swans being attacked by dogs and the birds swallowing weights. Anglers have also been asked not to leave rubbish lying around and a call has been made to the public to contact the centre if they see a swan in distress.

She added: "If you have a dog and take it out for a walk and there is wildlife around then keep it on a leash."
