A WOMAN shoplifter was arrested after wielding a knife when challenged by a supermarket manager in the street.

The incident happened near the Spa's railway station at approximately 5.40pm on Wednesday, July 19.

A few minutes earlier, the woman had left Morrisons in St Andrew's Square - chased by the manager - after taking bottles of alcohol, including vodka.

Police searched the town centre and surrounding areas and arrested the woman - who had two lock-knives in her possession - only 35 minutes later in Meadow Road.

She remained in custody at Worcester police station overnight where she was charged with possessing an offensive weapon, theft from a shop, resisting arrest and causing fear or provocation of violence by words or behaviour.

When she appeared at Worcester magistrates court the following day the woman - who is staying in Droitwich on a temporary basis - was committed in custody to appear at Worcester Crown Court.

Acting Inspector Jane Francis, of Wychavon police, said: "This was a prime example of the quick thinking and efficiency of local police officers who, through their local knowledge and professionalism, were enable to locate and apprehend the woman quickly - and without harm to members of the public, the woman or themselves.

"The public can be further reassured by the fact that the offender is not a local resident. Wychavon in general - and Droitwich in particular - remain two of the safest places to live in the UK."
