AN ambitious theme meant flower-filled Malvern's first ever entry in the Heart of England in Bloom competition impressed the judges.

Les Goodman and David Wassell gave a positive verdict after being taken on a whirlwind tour of the town's horticultural highlights on Wednesday.

Places they visited included the town centre, St Ann's Well, Rose Bank Gardens, Poolbrook Road and Malvern Community Hospital.

The theme was biodiversity and householders were encouraged to get involved by planting flowers to attract insects and leaving out water for hedgehogs and other creatures to help sustain wildlife.

This focus really impressed Mr Goodman, who said it was an ambitious target.

"Malvern's done very well," he said. "First time entries are normally on a learning curve but Malvern seems to have already learnt a lot. It's done things I wouldn't have expected to see in a first time entry.

"It all bodes well for the future. I'm very impressed."

Mr Goodman said he would perhaps like to see the areas surrounding the town involved next year.

Malvern has always run a town competition but this was its first year entering the regional contest.

Judge David Wassell said he had very much enjoyed walking around Malvern.

"I didn't realise Malvern has so much to offer," he said. "I'm definitely going to come back for a visit when I have more time.

"I have been very impressed, it's a very creditable effort."

Malvern Town Council chairman Michael Selby was pleased the judging day went so well and thanked residents for their efforts.

"I think the people of Malvern have done us proud. It's a wonderful effort which we have got to keep developing for future years."

The town will find out how it has fared in the competition in September.
