The grass fire on Tuesday on the eastern slopes of the Beacon above the Earnslaw Quarry is a reminder of the dangers of conflagration after a long hot spell such as we have had recently.
Concern is compounded two incidents - the most recent last Saturday - in which quite large groups of young males have driven vehicles into the quarry above Westminster Spout above West Malvern with the intention of having barbecue parties.
There was a similar problem last year in the Black Hill area and there is some thought that the same groups may be attempting to move their activities to West Malvern.
One group claimed to have had permission for such activities, but the Conservators confirm that they will never grant permission for vehicular access to the Hills beyond the marked limits in any circumstances.
Any local resident who sees vehicles on the Hills is invited to note registration numbers and notify the Conservators (01684 892002) who will follow the matter up the DVLC.
Meanwhile, the Conservators, who normally do not object to barbecues on hill land provided cooking is carried out on raised barbecues, are appealing to locals not to risk lighting fires of any kind on the Hills while the present hot dry spell persists.
Tonight (Friday)'s WestFest fundraising evening at the Lamb Inn should also turn out to be a 'fun-raising' occasion.
It will kick off at 5.30p with live music, a barbecue (on the premises, not on the Hills!), a race night from 8pm, and an auction.
Tomorrow (Saturday), Jean Chapleo's gardens at Hillside Cottage will be open from 2-5pm in aid of church fabric funds. More details from Rosemary Herbert on 572497.
