TWO small incidents showing life in Malvern as it was 100 years ago were recounted in the Malvern News.
"Mr W Clinton and Mr Evans of Poolbrook were driving along Avenue Road in a two-wheeler on Friday afternoon, when the horse shied at a tarpaulin, under which some excavating was being carried out near Mr Joshua's residence. The horse bolted, the vehicle was upset and the occupants were thrown out, but not much injured. Mr A Hill stopped the runaway near the railway station.
"On Thursday afternoon, the fire brigade received a call to a fire on the railway near Malvern station. Three or four stacks of sleepers became ignited -- it is thought by a spark from a passing engine --and for a time burnt fiercely.
"Chief Officer Williams and four men, with the aid of the hose tender, soon got the flames under control. There was a similar fire on Wednesday, but this was extinguished by buckets of water from the station."
