YOUNG people who want to do something for the community in Stourport are being given the chance, with the help of a cash injection to fund a new scheme.
Worcestershire County Council's Millennium Volunteers project has been given £5,000 by the Government to pump prime the scheme - the Stourport Initiative - for 16 to 24 year olds.
It is intended to encourage people in the age group who would not normally become involved in voluntary work to do so.
Twelve volunteers are being sought for the initiative, which will enable them to boost their confidence and self-esteem and discover what personal skills they possess.
As part of the scheme, they will take part in teambuilding events and a residential visit.
Kim Caves, the county council's Millennium Volunteers project co-ordinator, said: "We have already proved, through our work, that young people are keen to get involved in volunteering in their communities.
"But, sometimes, they need a bit of help to enable them to get the confidence and skills they need to make contributions. This programme will offer them this kind of support and also reward their achievements."
Participants who complete the project successfully will earn a nationally recognised bronze Youth Achievement Award and a Youthworcs award from the county council.
Any young people in Stourport interested in taking part in the Stourport Initiative can call Kim Caves on 0121 453 6714 for more information.
