SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons has launched an appeal this week to prevent shopping trolleys being left on Evesham's streets, dumped in canals, abandoned in alleyways or left by railway lines.
Morrisons supermarket on Davies Road in the town has launched Trolley Watch in a bid to keep Evesham trolley free and is asking for the help of residents in the area.
All Morrisons stores are patrolled regularly to keep an eye on them, but according to Stephen Guoite, general manager at Morrisons in Evesham, occasionally trolleys are taken off the premises.
He wants to combat the problem and ensure that the local area is not marred by any more abandoned trolleys.
Mr Guoite said: "The removal of trolleys is an issue that we take seriously.
"Morrisons is a key part of the community and the last thing we want is for our trolleys to deter from the look of the area."
"As such, if any residents spot a stray trolley, they can call us and we will be there as quickly as we can.
"At morrisons, we are renowned for our award-winning customer service. The Trolley Watch scheme is another way of ensuring that our customers and local residents are served to the best of our abilities."
He added: "We already have a number of practices in place to help ensure that as many trolleys as possible stay on our property. All trolleys at the store are subject to the £1 coin release system, meaning that customers wanting to use a trolley are required to insert a £1 coin into the locking device.
"Only once the trolley is returned to the trolley bay after use, is the £1 coin released from the locking system.
He said: "This, together with regular patrols by staff around the car park and surrounding area, ensures that only a very small percentage of our trolleys go missing. If through the Trolley Watch scheme our customers inform us of only one that has been left in the area around the store, we would be more than happy to come and collect it to help ensure the environment remains as pleasant as possible."
Any residents who spot an abandoned Morrisons trolley should call 49351.
