I AM writing in relation to your article "Dustbin bugs anger woman" in last week's issue of the Shuttle/Times & news regarding maggots in dustbins.
I, too, have had this problem especially as I have an extra bin capacity for disposable nappies. I also contacted Wyre Forest District Council only to be told I could not have an extra collection. I was not offered any advice as Mr Andrew Dickens suggests they do.
I feel that in this period of particuarly hot weather that wheelie bins are inevitably going to be a perfect breeding ground for maggots.
But when Mr Dickens suggests that we simply purchase wheelie bin liners or pay a company to clean them, I am incensed. I pay a lot of council tax and feel that I should not have to pay extra money to overcome a problem that could easily be solved if collections were weekly.
Why should the recycled materials (which I clean before collection as requested by the council), be collected weekly, and the wheelie bins which are filled with bagged food waste, dirty nappies etc be collected fortnightly? The recycling rubbish is far less likely to attract maggots simply because it is clean.
As far as I can see the council simply needs to amend its collections and collect recycling waste fortnightly and wheelie bin rubbish weekly. Perhaps Mr Dickens could explain why this does not happen.
