WORCESTERSHIRE men's second team are top of their Midland League group after a comfortable home win against a strong Staffordshire outfit.

It didn't start off well in the foursomes and the county were down in all but one of their six matches after just nine holes, with only Graham Wallace and Matt Burge in front.

But Richard Turner and Mark Dixon fought back from five down after nine holes to get a brilliant half on the 18th.

Matt Pates and Rod Armstrong battled hard for a deserved single-hole victory on the 18th.

Richard Tattersfield and Andrew Cheese eventually claimed a comfortable 3&2 victory.

Tom Pulling and Steven Lane are unbeaten this season, and it needed a great fightback from two down at the turn to eventually win their match by a single hole.

Wallace and Burge ended up 3&2 victors in their game and only Luke Rogers, of Kidder-minster, and James Newman, of The Worcestershire, ended up losers in the foursomes.

Going into the singles with a 4.5-1.5 lead, Droitwich golfer Pulling was first out and came back with a 2&1 victory over Steven Tooth.

Next out was Lane, another golfer from The Worcester-shire. He had to watch his opponent hole a monster putt on the last for a dramatic halve.

Further wins from Turner, Newman and Armstrong meant Worcestershire needed just one more point for overall victory.

It eventually came from Cheese, who eased to a comfortable 5&3 victory in his match.

In final matches, Pate lost 4&3 to Lee Hackett, and Wallace got a good halve against Martin Weston, which meant Worcestershire ended with a three-point win.

The first team lost out to Staffordshire by the narrowest of margins and are fourth in their group.
